Beating the Odds

Dr. Barbara Harris is one of the six recipients of the 2016 Courage To Come Back Awards, presented by Coast Mental Health. The awards are presented to people who have overcome significant obstacles to contribute back to their communities.

Harris is a trauma therapist who uses her own difficult life experiences to help others. Despite having just a grade 8 education at 40 years old, she resolved to go back to school as a mature student. Against past assumptions about her abilities, she excelled in university, doing her BSW and MSW degrees at the UBC School of Social Work and a PhD in Education from Simon Fraser University.
