New paper from Hannah Kia: peer support to mitigate suicide in trans populations

Hannah Kia, together with colleagues Kinnon Ross MacKinnon, Alex Abramovich, and Sarah Bonato, recently published a manuscript in Social Science and Medicine on the role of peer support in protecting against suicide in trans populations. This article was based on a scoping review study that highlighted the potential significance and function of peer-based social support in buffering against the negative impacts of exposure to anti-trans stigma, violence, discrimination, and other minority stressors among trans populations and, by extension, in helping to reduce rates of suicidal ideation and behaviour in these groups. The study revealed, among other findings, the likely promise of under-examined sources of peer support, including those originating online, in mitigating suicide risk.
