In Memoriam: Murray Sinclair

Murray Sinclair, the Anishinaabe senator and former Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), has passed away at the age of 73. A member of Peguis First Nation, Sinclair was a pioneering figure in Canada’s legal and public service sectors, becoming the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba.

As Chief Commissioner of the TRC, his work was instrumental in raising global awareness of the injustices of Canada’s residential school system and advancing the process of decolonization and reconciliation. His contributions to justice and Indigenous rights earned him numerous honours, including the Order of Canada, and he leaves behind a lasting legacy in the effort for justice and healing for Indigenous communities across Canada.
