We are so excited to congratulate Candara Bruyere, a 4th year BSW student who is a successful recipient of the 2024 HSBC Emerging Leader and Wesbrook Scholar Award. Premier Undergraduate Scholarships and Westbrook Scholars are considered UBC’s most prestigious designations offered to senior students with outstanding academic performance, leadership, and involvement in student and community activities.
Candara is Cree, Anishinaabe, French from Sagkeeng First Nation. Her passion for reconciliation and decolonization is woven throughout her social work studies. Catalyzed by her lived and professional experiences, Candara aspires to change the way social services and helpers engage with Indigenous communities by strengthening Indigenous survivance (resistance and survival) despite violence and societal injustices, by amplifying Indigenous voices, creating more culturally and trauma-informed spaces to better support the wellbeing and empowerment of Indigenous People.
Join us in sharing our heartfelt congratulations to Candara!
