BSW Alumni Q&A with Jennifer Varatharajah

“I believe this environment will foster meaningful connections and provide a solid foundation for generalist practice, helping me discover my niche within the field.”
BSW'24

Jennifer is a second-generation Tamil Canadian, and alumna of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at the UBC School of Social Work. Now, with a BSW degree focused on child welfare, she joins the School again in further advancing her social work journey as she pursues a Master of Social Work (MSW). She has actively engaged with the Downtown Eastside community through various organizations, and hopes to make a meaningful impact on marginalized communities, particularly those facing challenges related to addictions and mental health.

Why did you choose Social Work at UBC?

I chose to pursue Social Work at UBC for several compelling reasons. During my research, I was impressed by UBC’s strong commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and social equity, which resonates deeply with my own values. Additionally, the esteemed reputation of UBC’s School of Social Work, combined with smaller cohort sizes, particularly appealed to me. Lastly, staying close to home was important to me, and I am fortunate to be a guest on the beautiful campus on Musqueam land.

What’s your favourite thing about the UBC experience?

My favorite aspect of the UBC experience is the sense of community within the School of Social Work. Despite the vastness of the UBC campus, the School itself has a close-knit atmosphere that fosters strong connections between students and faculty. I’ve particularly valued the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with my peers and to be regarded as a colleague by the faculty. Additionally, the supportive environment at the School of Social Work has empowered us as students to actively contribute to shaping the program and making impactful changes.

How has your social work degree shaped, or deconstructed your understanding of social work?

My social work degree has profoundly shaped and expanded my understanding of the field. It has deepened my appreciation for the complexity of social issues and the diverse approaches needed to address them effectively.

“The rigorous coursework and hands-on experiences have challenged my preconceived notions and encouraged me to think critically about systemic inequalities and the role of social work in fostering change.”

Overall, the program has helped me develop a more nuanced and informed perspective on social work, emphasizing the importance of empathy, advocacy, and evidence-based practice.

What aspect(s) of the BSW program prepared you for your future endeavors?

The program’s emphasis on practical experience, including triad practice, role-playing, and practicum opportunities has prepared me for my future endeavors. These hands-on approaches allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, which was essential for my development and learning in the field of social work. The program also provided me with numerous opportunities to meet and connect with social workers in the community, many of whom have generously become invaluable mentors and guides in my professional and academic journey.

What advice do you have for students considering studying at the School of Social Work?

I encourage students to actively engage with their peers and focus on building a community of practice during the program. The small cohort size provides a unique opportunity to explore your values and goals while beginning your career. Establishing connections with classmates and faculty is invaluable—not just during your time in the program but throughout your professional journey. The social work industry is relatively small, making these relationships even more important as they can lead to future opportunities, support and collaborations. A strong network of peers and mentors can significantly enrich your experience and contribute to your success in the program.
