Struggling with internalized homophobia and self-hatred at 19, the UBC School of Social Work alumni Alex Sangha found purpose in “seva,” or selfless service, which led him to a distinguished career in social work and advocacy. He founded Sher Vancouver, supporting queer South Asian and BIPOC communities, and received Canada’s Meritorious Service Medal in 2018.
Sangha’s path also led him to filmmaking after the tragic murder of a Sher Vancouver member, resulting in the award-winning documentary “My Name Was January.” Recognizing film as a way to inspire change, he co-founded the Sundar Prize Film Festival to support social justice through art.
