2024 Dr. Richard B. Splane Lecture in Social Policy with Lisa Lapointe

On Monday April 15, 2024, the UBC School of Social Work and the United Nations Association of Canada (Vancouver branch) hosted the 2024 Dr. Richard B. Splane Lecture in Social Policy, featuring Lisa Lapointe, BC’s chief coroner of 13 years. Held at the Earth Science Building in Vancouver, the lecture shed light on BC’s toxic drug crisis and the lessons learned during Lapointe’s tenure.

This lecture offered valuable insights into the complexities of the toxic drug crisis and emphasized the need for informed, evidence-based interventions to reduce harm and prevent loss of life.

Class of 2024 Convocation

On May 22, 2024, a convocation was held to celebrate the achievements of our social work students who completed their degrees.

It was a beautiful sunny day and students, family and school members gathered outside to celebrate students’ hard work and dedication and enjoy a big yummy cake.

 

2024 Staff and Faculty Retreat

On August 27, 2024, the staff and faculty of the UBC School of Social Work gathered for a collaborative retreat at the UBC Golf Club. The day was centered around team-building exercises, designed to foster connection and strengthen relationships among colleagues. It provided a valuable opportunity for faculty and staff to come together, engage in meaningful discussions about the school’s current initiatives, and share their thoughts on ways to improve communication, refine internal processes and create a more positive and productive work experience for all.

The day was not only productive but also filled with energy, good food, laughter, passion, and creativity, and overall, the event was a success.

 

2024 Paul Cheng Memorial Lecture

The 2024 Paul Cheng Memorial Lecture took place on September 3, 2024 in the Musqueam Cultural Centre and was delivered by Dr. Richard Vedan (Chiteleqches) of the Secwepemc First Nation, who was also honored as the Inspiring Social Worker of the Year. The award, created in memory of Paul Cheng, celebrates social workers who demonstrate exceptional commitment to marginalized communities, much like Paul did throughout his 40-year career supporting immigrants, refugees, and vulnerable groups. Congratulations to Dr. Vedan and the other remarkable nominees: So Han Yip, Bella Cenezero and Amanda Amaral.
