Free Workshop: A Case Study in Working with Mental Health and Substance Use

Do you struggle to effectively support clients dealing with mental health and substance use challenges?
This free workshop offers an introductory look at mental health and substance use and the everyday challenges frontline service providers face in this work. This is also your chance to experience the teaching approach behind our self-paced, online UBC micro-certificate in Mental Health and Substance Use.
You’ll learn through a guided, interactive case study, with the opportunity to pose questions about mental health and substance use practice and policy.
The session will be facilitated by Jack York, a sessional lecturer and program coordinator for UBC’s School of Social Work, and an experienced mental health and substance use clinician, educator, and researcher.
Audience
- This free workshop is for frontline staff in housing, harm reduction, outreach, child protection, education and similar roles, including staff in non-profit and government-funded social service programs and agencies.
- No prior experience or clinical background is required.
- Everyone’s welcome, whether or not you go on to take the full micro-certificate. The workshop is designed to be educational on its own. We invite you to join us for what we hope will be a stimulating and thought-provoking exchange.
Format
- The session follows the same format as the monthly live virtual sessions of the UBC micro-certificate on Mental Health and Substance Use, so it’s a good opportunity to sample the course and ask questions.
- The first hour will be dedicated just to the workshop and you are welcome to stick around at the end for a 20-minute Q&A about the micro-certificate.
