The ongoing destructive impact of the student-to-student abuse that occurred within the Indian Residential School System is a devastating legacy of Canada’s attempt at the cultural genocide of Indigenous peoples. Little is known about what has been described as a living monster that continues to negatively impact Indigenous peoples and communities. Using Indigenous research methodologies in conjunction with a research-based theatre approach, an interdisciplinary team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars, students and community collaborators worked with oral testimonies from residential school survivors to identify stories and themes of peer-to-peer violence. The team then co-created a play, Dark Secrets, presented through this podcast, which offers insight into the phenomenon.

A 30-minute audio podcast presentation will be followed by a panel presentation and interactive discussion.

We invite you to wear an orange shirt to honour survivors and those who did not make it home.
