Tommy Spence, MSW, RSW (he/him/his) is a white settler of English and German ancestry. Born on treaty four territory, Tommy has been living as an uninvited settler on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples for the past 13 years.

Tommy has worked as an Adjunct Professor at the UBC School of Social Work since 2022. He also works as a therapist at a group counselling practice and at a publicly funded health clinic, where he works alongside young people renegotiating their relationship to drugs and alcohol.

Tommy’s teaching interests include the development of collaborative learning environments, supporting students to translate theory into experience near ways of understanding and practicing and creating opportunities for student lived experience to be centered in the classroom. He has given guest lectures and trainings at a variety of non-profit and post-secondary institutions on topics such as Narrative Therapy, working collaboratively with young people and burnout prevention/wellness in front line social service work.
