Social justice is a central part of many social work Codes of Ethics worldwide and underlies the social work endeavor. Though social justice is a central, rather than an optional tenet of ethical practice, it is often difficult to enact in the context of late neoliberalism, in particular due to inadequate funding for services, managerialism and New Public Management, increased tolerance for inequities, and growing demand for services and social care. This Symposium, celebrating 90 years of working for social justice and social care, invites papers on any aspect of:
- Social justice and its links to many forms of social work practice including with individuals, families, communities and globally
- Changes in social policy or practice that enable or inhibit more ethical and socially just understandings and practices
- Teaching and learning ethical, social justice social work, including Indigenizing curricula and changing social work workplace cultures
- Research and practice approaches that highlights the voices of those less heard in social work and society
This Symposium is a collaborative project of the School of Social Work, UBC and the Department of Applied Social Sciences, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It will include individual papers presentations as well as round tables on teaching and learning of social work practice. This is also a publishing opportunity, as depending on the quality of the papers and subject to agreement with potential journal publishers, we plan to publish a Special Issue of a journal (more details to follow).
Please send abstracts, indicating individual paper or round table presentation, maximum 150 words to Donna Baines at firstname.lastname@example.org or Daniel Lai at email@example.com by October 1, 2019. Round table presentations should include a statement on the theme and aims of the presentation and a list of presenters. Notification of acceptance of papers will be sent by October 15.
Please join us to celebrate this auspicious anniversary. The School of Social Work at UBC is one the oldest schools of social work in Canada and welcomes local, national and international contributions.
